Get ready for more secrets, facades and bloody good twists: According to a press release from Lionsgate, a sequel to the 2025 film The Housemaid will begin filming this year, with Sydney Sweeney once again playing the titular role.
Based on the 2023 Freida McFadden novel of the same name, The Housemaid’s Secret will be adapted by The Housemaid screenwriter Rebecca Sonnenshine and directed by Paul Feig, who helmed the first movie. In addition to Sweeney as the titular character, Michele Morrone, who played groundskeeper Enzo in the first film, will return.
The Housemaid, based on McFadden’s 2022 novel, hit theaters on Dec. 19, 2025 and was a box office success. It tells the story of Millie Calloway (Sweeney), a formerly incarcerated woman who gets a job working as a live-in housekeeper for the wealthy Winchesters. While Andrew Winchester (Brandon Sklenar) is a kind and loving father, his wife, Nina (Amanda Seyfried), is cruel to Millie and behaves erratically, to the point that Millie becomes concerned for her safety. However, as the film progresses, Millie discovers that not everything is as it seems in the Winchester house — and that it may be its own kind of prison.
The Housemaid’s Secret continues Millie’s story. In the novel, Millie is hired to work for another well-off woman, who is seemingly being abused by her husband. As Millie tries to assist her new boss, she gets tangled in a web of deceit.
McFadden, a working physician who writes under a pen name, is a prolific thriller writer and has multiple screen adaptations in the works. Sony is developing a big-screen version of The Surrogate Mother, based on the author’s 2018 novel; Apple Original Films is working on a feature version of The Teacher, based on the 2024 novel; and Amazon will adapt The Tenant, McFadden’s 2025 thriller. Dear Debbie, set to be released later this month, will also be adapted into a TV series for Amazon.
The Housemaid’s Secret is the second of three novels in The Housemaid series, which also includes the 2024 novel The Housemaid Is Watching. Each novel follows Millie as she gets wrapped up in a new mystery. McFadden also penned the short story The Housemaid’s Wedding, published in 2025.
